Hospitals frequently upgrade or replace their medical equipment, resulting in large quantities of unrequired items. Unfortunately, much of this equipment, which is still functional and can be used effectively, ends up in landfills or is returned to suppliers who often discard it. This practice is detrimental to the environment and imposes a significant financial burden on our healthcare system and society.
In New Zealand alone, one company has estimated that over 1,700 tonnes of reusable single use items end up in landfills each year. They believe they can save the New Zealand health system $100 million each year by stopping the dumping process.
